Common Feng Shui Mistakes in Home Design and How to Fix Them

1. Bedroom Above the Garage
The garage is an area that contains exhaust fumes, toxic gases, radiation, and generates a lot of noise. This creates an unstable and disruptive energy source, which is incompatible with the calm and restful energy that a bedroom requires. As a result, it can be difficult to get a good night’s sleep and may lead to ongoing mental discomfort or instability.

The best solution is to place the bedroom in a more suitable location in the house. If relocating the bedroom is not possible, you can place air-purifying plants in the corner of the room to neutralize the negative energy. You may also decorate the bedroom with yellow or brown carpets, or place a red square cloth under the mattress to ward off toxic energy.

2. Bedroom Above the Kitchen
This is a common issue in one-story houses that add a loft for sleeping space, or in homes with missing corners that prevent bedrooms from being placed on the ground floor. According to feng shui, having a bedroom above the kitchen causes hot and dry energy to accumulate in the space. Over time, this may lead to feelings of suffocation, irritability, mental stress, and can potentially contribute to health problems related to the liver or kidneys.

You can remedy this by placing a yellow rug under the bed. For better results, you should also place 36 ancient coins beneath the rug.

3. Main Door Facing the Back Door
Having the main entrance directly aligned with the back door creates what is known in feng shui as the "Piercing Path" (Xuyên đường sát) — a major taboo in home design. This layout causes positive energy (chi) to flow straight through the house and escape immediately, which can lead to loss of wealth and declining luck.

To remedy this, you can place a decorative screen between the two doors to block the direct alignment. Alternatively, hang a string of ancient Chinese coins (known as "Five Emperor Coins") or install a feng shui crystal ball near the back door to diffuse the energy and prevent wealth from flowing out.

4. Main Door Facing the Bathroom Door
The bathroom is considered an area of negative energy in feng shui and is often located in inauspicious zones to help balance the overall energy. Meanwhile, the main entrance is where positive energy and good fortune enter the home. When the main door directly faces the bathroom door, it creates a major feng shui conflict, potentially causing misfortune, obstacles, and negatively impacting the family’s health.
